to promote global education about systemic
paradigms of human living that are sustainable,
socially and environmentally just, and
spiritually meaningful. It does this
through publishing and other forms of
communications in both rational and
In defining its mission, the Institute
draws especially on the cosmological
vision of Thomas Berry (“cosmogenesis"),
on the importance of the law of complexity,
and on the principles of the Earth Charter.
Further, the Institute stresses the
urgent need for these systemic paradigms
for the Arts, Education, Philosophy,
and Spirituality. In service of its
mission, the Institute pursues the following
areas of activity.
The Institute develops scholarly and
popular projects that are consistent
with its mission. See the next section

The Institute publishes books, monographs,
and information services in the many
forms available with print and electronic
The Institute promotes the production
and distribution of videos, CD-Roms,
Long-distance Learning Programs, and
Redwoods Institute is a project of ECOWORKS,
Inc., a not-for-profit organization incorporated
in 1993. ECOWORKS was founded under the
guidance of Tom Berry to seek environmental
and social justice and to promote a new
cosmology with systemic paradigms and
alternatives for the young leaders of
tomorrow. Thomas Berry also serves on
the Board of Directors of ECOWORKS, Inc.

United States. English is the language used by the Institute in its
publications and projects. Additional
languages and locations may be added
in the future.
The Institute is currently establishing
an International Advisory Board made
up of distinguished persons who support
the Institute’s Mission.
The Institute welcomes
suggestions and proposals for the production
and publications of additional studies
and projects from scholars and artists
from around the globe. Current projects
of the Institute include the following.
"The Earth Charter":
A Study Book of Reflection For Action.
This book, authored by Drs. Elisabeth Ferrero and Edward “Joe”
Holland, is currently in print in English.
The text was translated
into Italian by Profs. Giovanni Principato
and Paolo Diotallevi, and published
in Italy in 2003 by Diabasis, Reggio
Emilia. In 2004, the Paulo Freire
Institute of San Paulo, Brazil published a Portuguese translation,
and a German translation is also presently
"The Great Work".
Currently Profs. Giovanni Principato
and Paolo Diotallevi are translating
into Italian this last major work by
of Mario Luzi".
Mario Luzi is Italy’s major contemporary
poet. His work is currently being translated
into English by Dr. Elisabeth Ferrero,
who earlier has done English translations
of several of Luzi’s poems. Dr.
of Luzi’s work into English will
also include a biography of this
significant Italian poet.
