Mission

The mission of the Redwoods Institute is to promote global education about systemic paradigms of human living that are sustainable, socially and environmentally just, and spiritually meaningful. It does this through publishing and other forms of communications in both rational and artistic styles.

In defining its mission, the Institute draws especially on the cosmological vision of Thomas Berry (“cosmogenesis"), on the importance of the law of complexity, and on the principles of the Earth Charter. Further, the Institute stresses the urgent need for these systemic paradigms for the Arts, Education, Philosophy, and Spirituality. In service of its mission, the Institute pursues the following areas of activity.

  • Projects. The Institute develops scholarly and popular projects that are consistent with its mission. See the next section for more details on current projects.
  • Publishing. The Institute publishes books, monographs, and information services in the many forms available with print and electronic technologies.
  • Education. The Institute promotes the production and distribution of videos, CD-Roms, Long-distance Learning Programs, and Electronic Conferences.

Structure

The Redwoods Institute is a project of ECOWORKS, Inc., a not-for-profit organization incorporated in 1993. ECOWORKS was founded under the guidance of Tom Berry to seek environmental and social justice and to promote a new cosmology with systemic paradigms and alternatives for the young leaders of tomorrow. Thomas Berry also serves on the Board of Directors of ECOWORKS, Inc.

  • Locations & Languages. The Institute is housed in the United States. English is the language used by the Institute in its publications and projects. Additional languages and locations may be added in the future.
  • International Advisory Council. The Institute is currently establishing an International Advisory Board made up of distinguished persons who support the Institute’s Mission.

Projects

The Institute welcomes suggestions and proposals for the production and publications of additional studies and projects from scholars and artists from around the globe. Current projects of the Institute include the following.

  • "The Earth Charter": A Study Book of Reflection For Action. This book, authored by Drs. Elisabeth Ferrero and Edward “Joe” Holland, is currently in print in English. The text was translated into Italian by Profs. Giovanni Principato and Paolo Diotallevi, and published in Italy in 2003 by Diabasis, Reggio Emilia. In  2004, the Paulo Freire Institute of San Paulo, Brazil published a Portuguese translation, and a German translation is also presently being prepared.
  • "The Great Work". Currently Profs. Giovanni Principato and Paolo Diotallevi are translating into Italian this last major work by Tom Berry.
  • "The Poetry of Mario Luzi". Mario Luzi is Italy’s major contemporary poet. His work is currently being translated into English by Dr. Elisabeth Ferrero, who earlier has done English translations of several of Luzi’s poems. Dr. Ferrero’s  translation of Luzi’s work into English will also include a biography of this significant Italian poet.
